Company History

The story behind this Commerce Road showroom actually predates the Costello's name now on its sign. Long before it became Costello's Hearth & Spa, this Forest Hill location operated as Courtland Hearth & Hardware, a business that's been outfitting Harford County homes with wood stoves, pellet appliances and gas fireplaces since 1951. Nearly three-quarters of a century of local know-how baked into one storefront. That deep local root system later joined a much larger family story: Costello's Ace Hardware traces back to 1973, when Vincent "Vinnie" Costello, a father of ten who'd just lost his air conditioning business in a recession, took a gamble on a struggling, under-stocked 2,000-square-foot hardware store in Deer Park, New York. Vinnie grew that single store into a family retail business now spanning New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, all while insisting his kids learn the same lesson he lived by, "treat them like family." Today, his children, including CEO Mike Costello and President Jamie Costello Maloney, continue to build on that philosophy. The Forest Hill showroom, together with sister businesses like Tri-County Hearth & Patio Center and All Pro Chimney Services, shows just how much the family business has grown. What started as a hardware store has expanded into a trusted name in the hearth and spa industry.
