Matchless Stove & Chimney / Rensselaer, NY

A library book called “Be Your Own Chimney Sweep” landed in Tim Madden’s hands back in 1981, and it’s been lighting Capital Region fireplaces ever since. Today his family runs the East Greenbush/Rensselaer showroom the same hands-on way it started. Gas, wood and electric fireplaces, stoves and inserts, full chimney sweeping and repair, and outdoor living pieces, all chosen by a team that’s genuinely climbed the rooftops here since the beginning. WeLoveFire.com is glad to call them a preferred dealer: this is a crew that treats every install like it’s going into their own living room, and that kind of care is exactly what keeps a home’s fire safe and beautiful for decades.

Company History

It started with a library book. In 1981, Wanda Madden brought home "Be Your Own Chimney Sweep," and her husband Tim took it as a sign to launch what became Matchless Stove & Chimney. By 1984 he'd patented the Matchless Chimney Monitor, a video inspection camera demoed at the National Guild of Chimney Sweeps tradeshow, and the business kept growing through the purchase of Starkweather Supply in Glenmont and, later, its own showrooms.

Facilities & Showroom

The East Greenbush/Rensselaer location is the newest of Matchless's three Capital Region showrooms, opened in early 2023 to bring the family's fireplaces, stoves, inserts and mantels closer to Rensselaer County homeowners. Monday and Tuesday visits are by appointment, so you get a staff member's full attention while you're weighing gas versus wood or picking a mantel style, and the doors are open for walk-in browsing Wednesday through Saturday. It's a smaller, no-warehouse showroom by design — built for looking closely at real display units and talking through your space, with any purchase pickup handled through the Glenmont hub just down the road.

Product Summary

Gas fireplaces and inserts come from Kozy Heat and Valor, wood stoves from Vermont Castings, Jotul, Empire Stove and IronStrike, and the showroom rounds out with electric fireplaces and inserts and even the company's own vented Matchless Gas Logs. Outside, the lineup runs from Villawood and Courtyard wood-burning outdoor fireplaces to Fortress, Riverside and Galaxy gas fire features, Sanctuary and VORO fire tables, and SABER grills for the patio. Whatever the fuel type, every piece here was picked because the team would put it in their own backyard.
