Pellet stoves and inserts need to be plugged into a 120-volt outlet. The “brains” of the stove (the circuit board) as well as the fans on the equipment and the auger (or pellet feed mechanism) are reliant on electricity to operate. However, there are manufacturers that have battery back-up systems available for specific models. If you’re living in an area where the reliability of electric service is difficult in stormy or windy weather, this is definitely something to consider. Some battery back-up systems will allow the stove to function up to 24 hours. Keep in mind that some battery maintenance will be required in addition to the regular maintenance for the stove.
